Basic needs grants awarded in Green Lake County - June 10 2010

The Green Lake County/Ripon Community Foundation awarded $14,000 to local nonprofit organizations supporting basic needs in Green Lake County. Among the organizations receiving grant awards:

  • Boys and Girls Club of the Tri-County Area ($5,000) to provide healthy meals and snacks for local youth. Healthy meals and snacks will ensure basic nutritional needs are met, allowing children to succeed in school and alleviating pressure on low-income families.
  • Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services ($5,000) to provide an outreach program for victims of domestic abuse. Rural victims face unique barriers and challenges, such as inadequate transportation, isolation, and fear of retaliation should they report their abuse to a friend or neighbor.
  • Community Options ($4,000) to improve training opportunities for childcare staff. Improving staff skills will create better long-term outcomes for local children, preparing them for school and recognizing special or basic education needs early on.

Each of these organizations has a strong presence throughout the county, ensuring residents in all Green Lake County communities receive basic needs support.

The grants were awarded from the Green Lake County U.S. Oil Open Fund, with the intent of addressing the root causes of poverty in our communities. The fund was started in 2009 with support from the local "Tee It Up 4 Basic Needs" golf outing. Proceeds from the golf outing were matched by the U.S. Oil Open and deposited into an endowment fund at the Green Lake County/Ripon Community Foundation. These are the first grants awarded from the fund.
