|Community volunteers honored at 2011 Evening of Stars event - April 14 2011
OSHKOSH, WI -- The Oshkosh Area Community Foundation in partnership with the Oshkosh Northwestern presented awards to 28 remarkable volunteers Wednesday, April 13, 2011, during An Evening of Stars.
Nearly 300 people gathered at the Oshkosh Convention Center for the event, held every other year since 2003. Recipients in six major award categories received $2,500 to a charity of their choice. Volunteers at Oshkosh area nonprofits also were awarded by their respective agencies as volunteers of the year.
"Hopefully, hearing about these volunteers and honoring their service is an inspiration and will provide a spark for each of us to carry on with our volunteer efforts, or to begin volunteering for a cause close to our hearts," said Stew Rieckman, executive editor and general manager of the Oshkosh Northwestern.
The Unsung Heroes Award, granted to the National Association of Letter Carriers Local 173 for its Stamp Out Hunger food drive, was presented for the first time in the history of the event. The award seeks to recognize a group whose grassroots effort has made a difference in the community.
