About the Cover

Directly across the street from Webster Stanley Elementary School is one of the best natural ice skating rinks you can find during the winter months in Oshkosh. It's Miller's Bay on the shores of Lake Winnebago.

Thanks to outdoor recreation enthusiasts Steve Eliasen and Eric Smiltneek, thousands of youth have experienced cross country and downhill skiing and ice skating as part of school field trips and Dr. Eric's Skate Club. The program, modeled after a similar Lake Winnebago sailing experience, exposes all public grade school students to winter recreation. While Mother Nature delivered a shortened winter season in 2016-2017, last school year, more than 1,300 children learned to ski or skate.

Supported in part by the Bradford and Maureen Lasky Fund, Dr. Eric's Skate Club and the ski/skate school field trips are one of thousands of grants representing the collective investments of our donors interested in strengthening the Oshkosh region.
