Winneconne Historical Society
Mission Statement
The (WHS) was organized in 1962. The purpose of the Society is historical research and the gathering of records, pictures, and artifacts related to the history of the area.
History
The Society’s first project was to collect and preserve the local newspaper, The Winneconne News. At the end of each year, every issue of the Winneconne News is bound in a hard cover book. The Society then began planning for a suitable place in the Village for a museum. In the meantime, in an effort to increase membership and inform citizens of their activities, display cases were built, filled with donations of artifacts, and placed in the old Village Hall.
WHS has added many historical buildings to its complex at Marble Park throughout the years including the old Winneconne Railroad Depot, the Little Country Home, a One Room Schoolhouse, the Kay Wilde Doll Cottage, the Steamboat House, and the Bridge Tender House replica.
The museum complex is open Sundays, Noon to 4 p.m. between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Admission is free. WHS is an affiliate of the Wisconsin State Historical Society and is a member of Wisconsin State Genealogy Society, the Wisconsin Council for Local History, and the Winneconne Chamber of Commerce.
The Society’s biggest challenge is maintenance of the six buildings which is funded solely by donations from the public and businesses.
The Winneconne Historical Society has two funds with WACF, the Winneconne Historical Society- Geraldine Driscoll Memorial Fund, established in 2004 to support long term operations and capital improvements, and the Winneconne Historical Society Operations Fund, established in 2015 to support operations, special projects, and facility maintenance.
